Congratulations to the award winning Paddlesweep

Paddlesweep won a blog award last saturday. I don’t know any of the competition, but there’s no doubt Paddlesweep fully deserved to win.

A good-looking site, good posts and good discussions. What’s not to like about this blog?

They haven’t posted since winning, but I’m sure Paddle and Ms. Print will do their award proud when they recover from the celebrations.

Congratulations from a Dutch fan!

(a bit late, I know, thought I published this congratulatory post already, but only saved it as a draft ..)

Yes, Bravo and Pollard are in it for the money, and why not?

Money, money, money ..

Dwanye Bravo and Kieron Pollard turned down one-year contracts from the WICB. The reason is simple: money.

The WICB wants its central contracted players to be available for all international matches. The sum they are offering for this is 80.000 dollars.

Not bad, you might say, but both Bravo and Pollard make about ten times that money playing just a couple of weeks in the IPL.

Which leaves them with enough time on their hands to make appearances for various teams in domestic Twenty20-leagues all over the world. And getting paid plenty for doing so.

This doesn’t sit well with many cricket fans, who claim they have no national or professional pride, but I think Bravo and Pollard can’t be blamed.

Have they no national pride? Rubbish, they play for Trinidad & Tobago, their home country. West Indies is not a country in any sense, or sport, except in cricket.

And what about excelling at the highest level, Test matches, and being the best player you can be? Well, Bravo and Pollard didn’t say they don’t want to play Test matches for the West Indies, now did they?

And besides, not everybody – Chris Gayle, their Test captain, to name just one – agrees Test cricket is the pinnacle of the game.

So what do I think of their move? Not much really. Bravo and Pollard are just willing to take a bet on their international careers in return for a lot of money. A safe bet.

The WICB is still going to select them, because there are no real alternatives available. Bravo and Pollard know that too.

They will play for West Indies when its suits them and not when they have better-paying jobs lined up.

And in the unlikely scenario they won’t get selected anymore, there is the comforting knowledge of having enough money in the bank to last them a lifetime.

Doing what you like best and getting paid millions; I must admit I’m a bit envious.

Colly out of the woods and on the plane

Good news for England, Paul Collingwood is looking in better form at the end of a poor summer.

Some runs, a stunning catch and a wicket (the danger man Umar Akmal) of his medium pacers. All while struggling with a migraine!

Never mind the one dropped catch, this match will do him a world of good. And talk about him missing the plane to Australia can end now.

Time to ban Pakistan

Daily Mail’s Martin Samuel hits out hard at Pakistan today, naming them enemies of cricket.

I think he is right. Pakistan are the worst thing to happen to cricket in the game’s history.

It is not just the manical chairman Butt with his ridiculous claims, but everyone in Pakistan cricket, including captain Afridi, who stupidly tried to take the moral high ground after the Riaz-Trott incident.

Nobody in their camp has ever spoken out against anything that has happened in these last few weeks. They’re all trying to turn the blame on others instead of taking responsibility.

Always in defense, always pointing at others, always finding excuses and letting players of the hook, never getting to the bottom of things or trying to find a solution to apparent problems.

No wonder South Africa aren’t looking forward to touring Pakistan. It won’t be long before someone from Pakistan cricket will mention Cronje ..

Really, we don’t have anything useful to expect from Pakistan in this matter, so it’s time the ICC does something right for once and temporarily ban them from international cricket.

Let the ICC research all accusations of match-fixing, punish those players involved (if any are) and only then let Pakistan return to international cricket.

I’m just really fed up with Pakistan right now. I hope they lose today and don’t play England for a long, long time.
