Dutch to play Test matches, or another Saffa for England?

Test cricket could do with a touch of orangeDutch batsman Alexei Kervezee has a bright future according to many. Some even suggest he’ll develop into a good Test player.

People laughed when Kervezee was first compared to Graeme Hick. But it would be no surprise if it is Kervezee who finishes his Test career – for he will surely play at that level – with the better Test record.

This can only mean one of two things:

  1. Netherlands will gain Test status in a few years
  2. or England will have another South African-born batsman playing for them.

Naturally, I prefer the first. How about you? Pick an option below, and tells us what you chose in the comments!

Either way, it will be a proud moment for Dutch cricket if Kervezee ever steps on the field as a Test player.

I do not hate Stuart Broad

Over at paddlesweep.net they ran a poll on who is the most hated cricketer of them all. I voted for Stuart Broad, because even though I am England supporter, he really annoys the hell out of me every now and then.

But I don’t really hate Broad. I hate his manners when he gets frustrated.

Every time that happens – a bit to often –  he transforms from a good cricketer into a spoilt little kid: questioning the umpires decisions, yelling at teammates, throwing the ball at the batsman who refuses to get out, it’s all in his repertoire.

But like I said, I support England and watching him bowl for them when he’s on song is very pleasing. And why hate a guy who is getting a lot of wickets for your team, right?

Also, Broad is at the centre of one my favorite cricket memories. Remember this overthrow?

Name four famous cricket players from the Netherlands and win a price!

According to an article on Dutch cricket I just read, there are four famous Dutch cricketers.

If you can name all four of them, or at least three, in the comments, there’ll be a price for you.

And I am trusting you to not go Google the answer. That wouldn’t be fair and also – since we are looking for famous Dutch cricketers – completely unnecessary. Right?

I haven’t figured out yet what the price will be, but when you’re entering the competition you may also leave a suggestion.

Good luck!

Netherlands win, but the Dutch don't know it

Yesterday, Netherlands beat Scotland in an ODI. With the World Cup going on in South Africa, not many people will have noticed. Just like the Intercontinental Cup-game played over the weekend has gone by largely unnoticed by Dutch sports fans.

If the KNCB and ICC want to broaden interest in cricket in the Netherlands, they will have to get the sport under the attention of the public. To do that, they need media coverage.  And cricket will not get any coverage here when there is a World Cup football going on.

Last year, when Netherlands played the World Twenty20 and famously beat England in the opening game, cricket made the sports headlines. With not much else going on, cricket was an entertaining alternative and the surprise victory of our boys sparked more interest than ever.

Yesterday’s victory against Scotland is obviously not as sexy as beating England at the World Twenty20, but the latter would also not have gotten as much media coverage as it did, had there been a World Cup football to compete with.

The point is, planning international matches for the ‘lesser’ countries should include making sure there are no major sport events at the same time. It will not always be possible to avoid an overlap, but surely more effort could be made? Was there no way Scotland could have come over a week earlier?

Cricket’s governing bodies understand the role of the media perfectly, but seem to have missed the trick when planning these fixtures.

Ironically, there was an item yesterday on cricket in of the WC football tv-shows. Erik van Muiswinkel, a Dutch comedian and cricketer, visited the Wanderers for NOS’ Studio Sportzomer. I embedded it below. It is in Dutch, so for those of you who speak the beautiful language, enjoy:

Oranje verspeelt opnieuw goede start
